‘Aim To Win’ Campaign Launch
Rage, joy, and the split second in between
KontrolFreek (SteelSeries) · brand campaign · direction, production, film, photography, social assets
The Brief
Old School Collective brought us a campaign with a clear point of view: in gaming, control beats chance. The strategy was locked and the creative direction was set. What it needed next was a film that could make that idea feel like something.
The Idea
We didn't set out to make a commercial. We set out to make a film. "Rage & Joy" takes the split second most gamers know by heart, the eruption when everything finally clicks, and treats it as catharsis instead of spectacle. It opens on the aftermath: a controller spinning through the air, popcorn exploding, then a hard cut to black and a single breath. That chaos wasn't rage. It was joy. From there the film builds back toward the explosion, so by the time it lands, you've earned it.
What We Built
We anchored the entire shoot in one studio and built three lived-in worlds inside it, one for each kind of player: a shadowed FPS basement, a sun-warmed apartment mid-FIFA match, a poster-covered bedroom lit by the glow of a Switch. One cinematic world, three distinct personalities, total control over every frame. And we cast for truth over polish: real gamers, not models, chipped nail polish and all, because you can't fake the look of someone genuinely locked in.
How We Shot It
To put the audience inside the moment, we mounted cameras directly to controllers and players and leaned on POV, macro, and double-dolly moves that feel less like watching and more like sensation. Then we went further. Subtle CGI and AI-assisted work render the invisible connection between hand and hardware: the friction at the thumb, the fraction of a degree that decides a match, the hair rising on the back of a neck. Craft and technology, working the same frame.
The Film
The anthem runs as a hero :60, with three :15 cutdowns and a full photography and social package built around it. Sound does as much work as picture: tactile game audio and held breath set against an elegant classical score, chaos and grace colliding until a thumbstick flick starts to feel like choreography. One film, three worlds, one unmistakable feeling: the moment right before a win.
In partnership with our longtime collaborators at Old School Collective, who led the strategy and overall creative direction. Directed, produced, and built by Merit/Andrew. One team, start to finish.
